The Basics of Floating
-
Why do people use floating?
Research has demonstrated floating reduces anxiety and stress. It heightens cognitive awareness and helps in reducing pain. For some people floating on a regular basis helps us get away from the busy, stressful lives we all face today and allows for time to relax and escape our busy day-to-day stresses. Floating also provides people with an increase in their creative processes and helps them explore their thoughts and emotions in a semi-conscious, reflective, and meditation state. Floating can also help a person reduce pain and relax the muscles and joints that are affected, even at times helping in reducing chronic pain. -
What is in the water?
There are about 1,500 pounds of medical-grade Epsom salt. This solution of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) creates the weightless suspension of your body (creating the microgravity environment)and leaves your skin feeling smooth andrevitalized. Historically, millions of people have gatheredat places such as the Dead Sea and The Great Salt Lake for relief from pain and muscle aches the high salt water provides. Floating provides a modern-day way to experience the same relief. -
Will I feel claustrophobic?
Other float centers use pod floats which can often create a sense of claustrophobia, thus reducing the benefits of floating. We have designed a revolutionary experience to avoid this problem. Our center developed float experiences that serve to enhance the positive benefits of floating with the same sensory experience in the comfort of larger float rooms. This allows a person to relax even more and truly enjoy the full benefits of floating. -
How do I prepare for a float session?
To prepare for your float session, avoid caffeine and heavy meals at least 2-3 hours before your appointment. Arrive a few minutes early to fill out any necessary forms and get acquainted with our facility. We provide everything you need, including towels, earplugs, and toiletries, so just bring yourself and an open mind.

Preparing To Float
-
What do I need to do to prepare for my float experience?
Most importantly…relax. The float will help you relax but you do need to allow yourself to relax and be in the moment. There are a few additional things to consider. Try not to shave right before arriving. It isn’t the end of the world if you do…but salt water on freshly shaven legs isn’t the most pleasant thing on Earth. Remove your contacts before floating (bring a container to store them in). • If you have caffeine before you float, it may interfere with your ability to relax. Ladies, if it’s that dreaded time of the month, give us a call to reschedule. -
What happens if I get salt water in my eyes?
It’s going to sting. But no worries…you can just grab a towel above your tub, dab the salt water off, then get back to floating. There’s also a squirt bottle of clean water hanging on a hook next to the tub in case you need it. -
What should I wear during floating?
Floating sessions are completely private, so most people wear nothing at all. You may find feeling the fabric of a swimsuit rubbing or pressing against your body is a distraction from the floating experience. Non-swim-related garments are not allowed (i.e. jeans, down parkas, or footie pajamas) -
What should I wear during floating? Should I shave before floating?
We suggest not shaving the day of your float. The salt water can cause stinging which can be irritating and distracting to your float experiences for up to the first 20 minutes of your float. When shaving your face, wait 6 hours or longer, and when having other parts of your body we recommend 12 hours or longer before floating. -
Can I float if I recently dyed my hair?
We advise waiting until the dye has had time to completely set. If it hasn’t, there’s a chance floating could bleach it. If it doesn’t come off when you towel-dry your hair, you should be okay to float. Please wait at least 7 days after dying your hair to float. -
Should I eat before floating?
You can float on a full or empty stomach. However, floating on a full stomach may create a distraction because of the feelings and sounds the digestive track may bring. Thus, it is usually recommended to eat an hour or two before your float time. -
Is there a better time of the day to float?
There is no good or bad time to float. People have their own preferences; they may prefer h morning, afternoon, or evening. You may want to try different times during the day to see which time has the most positive experience for you. -
Should I bring anything to my float?
We recommend you bring any personal grooming products you may want post-float (hairbrush, special products, cosmetics, etc.). We provide complimentary amenities that you will need: towels, shower products, earplugs, makeup wipes, etc. In addition to your float room supplies, our restrooms include extra towels, hairdryers, and body lotions.
The Experience of Floating
-
How do I get in the float tub?
Getting into a float tank is very similar to getting into a bathtub. Once you are in the water, gently lie back, and the salt will keep you afloat. -
What does it feel like inside a float tub?
Floating feels like nothing, which is (unsurprisingly) difficult to describe. Initially, the water is pleasantly warm, but quickly becomes less noticeable as the air and water are set to match the temperature of your skin. This equilibrium, combined with the weightlessness from the buoyant solution, results in very little external stimuli and allows your mind and body room to relax, recover and recharge. The specific experience is unique to each individual and each float. However, most people report experiencing strong feelings of peace and relaxation. Some floaters report feeling highly creative or find themselves thinking about profound subjects. -

Is one float enough, or do I need multiple sessions?
Much like exercise, meditation, or therapy, floating is a practice. It is common to have a pleasant and relaxing experience during your first float, and you can expect to find that the experience strengthens and lengthens each time. You may only realize the full therapeutic potential of floating after multiple sessions. Many people find that floating 1-2 times a week allows them to sustain the benefits of floating.
